Restore land and unlock opportunities

Healthy land is the foundation of economic prosperity, and more than half of the world's GDP relies on natural resources. However, humans are consuming this natural capital at an astonishing rate: every minute, land the size of four football fields is losing its value due to degradation.

Land degradation can lead to the loss of biodiversity, increase the risk of drought, and force communities to migrate. The chain reaction triggered by this issue has spread globally, leading to problems such as rising food prices, social instability and population migration.

Desertification, land degradation and drought are among the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Up to 40% of the world's land has already degraded.

The United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) has entered its middle stage. We must accelerate our actions to reverse the trend of land degradation and achieve large-scale restoration. If no effective measures are taken, by 2030, we will need to restore 1.5 billion hectares of land and promote a trillion-dollar land recovery economy.

The theme of the 2025 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought commemoration is "Restore Land, Unlock Opportunities", emphasizing that restoring the natural foundation of land can create job opportunities, ensure food and water security, support climate action, and build economic resilience.

Put your ambition into action right now.
